It’d been a pretty tough season for Newcastle United fans as after a terrible summer where they were criminally underfunded, The Magpies got off to a poor start and slid towards the bottom of the table.
Going into the international break, however, Rafa Benitez’s side managed to pull off two superb results as they beat Watford and Bournemouth to register their first wins of the league season.
The two wins mean that Newcastle have now risen to 14th in the table but are only one point off Cardiff City in 18th.
Over the last few years, the hatred for Mike Ashley has grown among Newcastle fans but in what will come as great news for the Newcastle faithful, according to The Shield Gazette, Ashley is coming close to selling the business.
The Breakdown
Mike Ashley bought Newcastle in 2007 and saved the club from financial ruin. Within his reign, however, Newcastle have been relegated twice and although they gained promotion the following year, Newcastle’s fortunes under the owners have been poor.
Even with the best manager they’ve had since Bobby Robson, Newcastle have failed to realise their full potential.
Benitez managed to guide the club to 10th last season amid a year where he was once again given little support. The Spaniard’s contract runs out at the club next year and his future could well depend on whether the club is sold.
Ashley had been in talks with a consortium headed up by Amanda Staveley but publically ended the talks. If the report is true and Ashley is about to sell, the Newcastle fans could be put out of their misery.
